Have you heard of the Corporate Homie podcast? I actually learned about it here from one of our past Flyers! If not, it’s time to go check it out now. This gem is hosted by wonder-twins Demetra Liggins and our flyer today, Bemetra Simmons. Bemetra is by day serving the Tampa Bay community with United Way of the Suncoast. And then in her “spare time” she helps women and minorities navigate the waters of Corporate America on her witty podcast. Let’s get to know Bemetra!
1. Tell us in a few sentences what you do. And why you do it.
In my full-time work with United Way, I work on a daily basis to help families improve their lives. In many ways, I am doing the same thing with my passion project, Corporate Homie, by assisting women and minorities as they navigate the waters of Corporate America.
2. What is your contact info (that you want shared) please include any active social handles, websites etc.
Twitter: bkliggins, coporatehomie
Instagram: bkliggins; corporate homie
LinkedIn: Bemetra Simmons; Corporate Homie
3. When I wake up in the morning the first thing I do is…
Pray and read my daily devotional (My Portal Prayer) before going for a bike ride
4. My best business advice is….
Everyone should be the President and CEO of Whatever-Your-Name-Is Enterprises. No one will have more energy around your career then you will, so BE INTENTIONAL!
5. My professional goal for 2021 is…
Being the best UWS employee I can be and raising Corporate Homie’s profile
6. Supporting women in business is now more critical than ever. How can our community best support you?
I think we are already doing it. Features such as See Her Soar are critical to higlighitng the amazing women of our community.
7. Your Astrological sign:
Taurus. Focused and competitive as a bull.
8. Favorite donut:
Krispy Kreme glazed (you have to stop when the red light is on)
9. Favorite podcast:
The Corporate Homie podcast of course. Just kidding. I am big fan of The Daily and right now I am having a love affair with the Legends of Sport podcast. They feature people who work in the sports industry (not just players and coaches).
10. Favorite book:
I am avid reader so I don’t know that I have a favorite book. I recently read Finding my Voice by Valerie Jarrett and really enjoyed. There was so much I didn’t know about her before reading the book.
11. Favorite pandemic binge watch:
Oh that’s a tough one. I binged The Crown and can’t wait for additional seasons. I had not previously followed the Royal family of England but man, that series was good. And based on the interview Oprah held with Meghan and Harry, I am sure there will be many seasons to follow.
12. When I practice self-care I…
I cook (well grill). My family is originally from Memphis, TN and we take our BBQ seriously. My grilling game in on point.
13. The place I am happiest is…
Spending time with my wife. She is so funny, and a bit silly. She can turn ordinary tasks and errands into epic fun.
14. People are surprised to learn…
…that I am not coordinated. For some reason, people equate being athletic with being coordinated. Believe me, they are not the same.
15. 2020 taught me…
2020 has been a reminder, that at the end of the day relationships with friends and family matter more than anything else. We all think we have time. Time to go visit family. Time to have dinner with a friend. 2020 is a painful reminder that we are not promised time, so we should make the most of it.
