Jen McDonald is a community leader, entrepreneur, and risk management and insurance professional who lifts up business owners every day as she helps them understand the risks in their business and then mitigate those risks with simple risk management steps and insurance products. She describes this as “geeking out” with business owners, and we feel pretty confident that talking insurance with Jen is anything but boring! Let’s get to know more about Jen!

1. Tell us in a few sentences what you do. And why you do it.

I help businesses such as Contractors, Property Owners, Manufactures, Wholesalers, Office, and Retailers with their General Liability, Workers Comp, Property, Auto, Builders Risk, and other insurance needs. I love the process of geeking out with business owners, hearing about all of the exciting things they are working on and helping them think about it from the perspective of risk management.

3. When I wake up in the morning the first thing I do is…

Walk the dogs, wash my hands, eat breakfast.

4. My best business advice is….

Share your story with everyone. Connect with as many people as you can, and listen to them, learn what they need to be successful, connect them to those resources, repeat. Know how to articulate what you need to be successful and ask directly of everyone you encounter. Bashful has no place in Business.

5. My professional goal for 2021 is…

…to build a strong statewide network of professionals. My business development goal is to insure 10 new clients that have greater than 25,000 sqft of building space, $6,000,000 in sales, 10 vehicles, or Roofers with 5 employees and 3 years of active insurance.

6. Supporting women in business is now more critical than ever. How can our community best support you?

My busines complements Commercial Realtors, Commercial Bankers, and Property Managers so if you have any contacts in those roles please make the introduction. If you would like to grab a cup of coffee (even virtually) I would love to learn more about you and see how we can help each other.

7. Your Astrological sign:
Taurus

8. Favorite donut:
I’m a cyclist so any donut is a good donut to me! (find me on Strava if you’re a cyclist)

9. Favorite podcast:
Dishonorable Mention

10. Favorite book:
I love to read for both growth and fun. Right now my most recommended reading is How to be an Anti-Racist by Ibram X Kendi I have found it partners well with So you Want to Talk about Race by Ijeoma Oluo and Trevor Noah Born a Crime. I am also into science fiction, historical fiction and nonfiction books.

11. Favorite pandemic binge watch:
Schitt’s Creek

12. When I practice self-care I…
…ride my beach cruiser, with my dogs in the basket, along Bayshore to Davis Island along Channel Dr and around the airport to the inlet by the Yacht Club where I set up my mat and have a yoga session while the dogs snooze in the grass nearby. I’ve been known to lay out there well past 10pm reading a book (on my phone) or reflecting to myself.

13. The place I am happiest is…
…surrounded by friends and family.

14. People are surprised to learn I…
…tackle anything I’m afraid of head on. If it makes me nervous I make a point to address it. I was very nervous about being on video so I started giving a Facebook live after every Backstage Pass class I had in 2019. Who could have predicted how valuable that was going to be in 2020 and 2021?

15. 2020 taught me…
While I may not have been experiencing racism in America it was there impacting my friends in their everyday lives. While racism is present in America all men, women, and children are not free. All Americans must be brave acknowledging and denouncing racism and all Americans must be treated equitably in order for America to be the land of the free and the home of the brave.

We especially love that Jen used to be nervous on camera but took that fear and challenge head on…and before it was a crucial skill this past year when many of us were scrambling to make it work!  Jen is confident, kind and a champion of equality for all men, women and children in America.  Thank you Jen for sharing yourself (and your adorable pups!) with us today.
